During the renovation of the HUNGEXPO Budapest Congress and Exhibition Centre, special attention was dedicated to the full rejuvenation of the audio-visual system, for which we were responsible for the design and construction.

As part of the comprehensive modernization effort, we entirely upgraded the sound and projection technology in multiple buildings.

We integrated a brand-new Crestron room control system, occupancy indicators, and a Samsung *Digital Signage system into the infrastructure. These additions enable our client to offer visitors a modern and sophisticated experience.

Challenge

Considering the customer's needs, the following requirements emerged during the design of the AV system:

► The sound systems in the HUNGEXPO area, including halls and sectioned rooms, should be controllable both collectively and independently. They should also support the capability of making announcements from the central studio.

► The sound design of sectioned rooms should allow for separate and unified usage.

► The interfaces should operate intuitively, ensuring ease of use for individuals, even those without technical expertise.

► It was essential for the Digital Signage system to be accessible online and enable remote content management, even weeks in advance.

► The Digital Signage system must be reliable and robust, ensuring seamless operation with pre-loaded content, even in offline or "island mode," in the event of a network failure."

Solution

► Throughout the construction process, it was of utmost importance to identify the optimal sound system for all areas, ensuring high-quality speakers to deliver the best possible audio quality throughout the entire building.

In areas with suspended ceilings, ceilings, and walls, AUDAC type speakers were utilized. In the plenary hall of the CK building, a suspended JBL **line array sound system was installed to achieve impeccable sound quality.

Signal transmission between amplifiers, matrices, and audio sources is carried out through a ***DANTE network.

► The performance of the integrated sound system necessitated thorough cabling and zone allocation design.

Our task was not only to ensure uniform volume levels throughout but also to deliver exceptional sound quality for sectioned rooms, whether they were divided into two or three parts or combined.

The amplification for the 55 zones of the audio-visual system at the Convention and Exhibition Centre is managed by a set of 18 amplifiers, sound processors, and matrices (input and output routers).

►HUNGEXPO offers its visitors information through 125 newly installed Samsung DS displays. These Digital Signage displays are connected to the central MagicInfo server, allowing the operator to manage them easily.

These Digital Signage displays support scheduled image and video playback, even with accompanying sound. The dimensions of the displays were determined based on local conditions during the design process.

► In addition to sound systems, we also installed projection equipment in the sectioned and meeting rooms.

For the smaller rooms, we utilized two Samsung displays ranging from 43 to 65 inches in screen size. In the larger rooms, we incorporated projection screens with widths ranging from 2.5 to 5 metres, along with high-brightness Epson laser projectors.

► We designed a Crestron room control system to facilitate the easy control of audio and projection equipment in each conference and plenary room mentioned, as well as the control rooms in the CK building.

The matrix system, which serves as the foundation for sound amplification, is also constructed using Crestron devices.

► The Crestron room occupancy indicators at the entrances of meeting and sectioned rooms provide information to visitors based on pre-set calendar events.

These room occupancy indicators inform guests about upcoming events through colour changes in the display frame.

► Technological description

*The most precise way to explain the term Digital Signage would be to say it is a “digital content provision system”. It is the most dynamically developing communication interface for advertising uses, and is part of the so-called “advertising outside the comfort of one’s home” category.

The Digital Signage system is in reality not (only) an actual physical object, but the combination of hardware and software. It can display text and dynamic content (image, video, sound) on an electronic display.

The system and its displays are exceptionally effective for emergency alerts.

Anyone can learn the use of the software as it needs no specific IT skills.

**Line array systems are particularly useful in cases where the sound needs to be “projected” to greater distances.

At larger events due to the easily controlled polar pattern covering a given complex area (e.g. a stadium with stands and an arena, theatres, concert halls) can be done in a much more even fashion.

Line array systems most often have supporting software: the sound designer inputs the geometry of the area, and the software shows where and what types of speaker groups will need to be placed.

***DANTE (Digital Audio Network Through Ethernet): The protocol developed by the Australian Audinate is currently the most widespread digital audio solution.

The protocol does not require creating a dedicated IT network. It works perfectly on a structured IT network supporting the appropriate services (QoS, DiffServ, Gigabit), in parallel with other IT, broadcast and control data flows.
